Hyrox vs Spartan Race: What’s the Difference?

If you’re into fitness competitions, chances are you’ve heard of both Hyrox and Spartan Race. They’re two of the biggest names in the space — but they’re very different events. Here’s a breakdown so you know exactly what you’re signing up for.

What is Hyrox?

Hyrox is an indoor fitness race held in large arenas around the world. Every race follows the exact same format: 8 kilometers of running broken up by 8 functional fitness workout stations. The workouts are always the same — SkiErg, sled push, sled pull, burpee broad jumps, rowing, farmers carry, sandbag lunges, and wall balls. No surprises. No mud. No obstacles. Just you, the course, and the clock.

What is Spartan Race?

Spartan Race is an outdoor obstacle course race held on trails, mountains, and open terrain. The course changes every time and every location is different. You’ll face walls, ropes, spear throws, mud crawls, and carries — all in unpredictable conditions. Distances range from a 5K Sprint to a 21K Beast and beyond.

The Key Differences

Hyrox is predictable. You know the exact workout, the exact distance, and the exact format before you ever show up. That makes it highly trainable — you can prepare specifically for every single element. Spartan is unpredictable by design. The terrain, obstacles, and conditions vary, which is part of the appeal.

Hyrox is indoors. Spartan is outdoors. Hyrox is held in convention centers and arenas. Spartan takes place on mountains, farms, and trails. If you love being outside and don’t mind getting dirty, Spartan has a different kind of energy. If you want a controlled environment where your performance comes down purely to fitness, Hyrox is your race.

Hyrox is head-to-head comparable. Because every Hyrox race is identical, your finish time in Jacksonville means the same thing as a finish time in London. Spartan times aren’t directly comparable across courses.

Hyrox has divisions. Open, Pro, Doubles, and Relay — you compete within your category. Spartan has age group awards but the format is less structured around competitive divisions.

Which One is Right for You?

If you want a repeatable, measurable fitness challenge where you can track improvement over time — Hyrox. If you want adventure, variety, and don’t mind unpredictable conditions — Spartan. A lot of athletes do both. They scratch different itches.

Either way, both events will test your fitness in ways a regular gym routine never will.
